6.5 Waarom zou ik me iets van het milieu aantrekken? Moet ik geloven in klimaatverandering? Wat heeft dit met solidariteit te maken? Moeten we op zoek naar een nieuwe planeet?
God heeft de aarde aan onze zorg toevertrouwd (Gen 1,28). De zorg voor ons gemeenschappelijke thuis houdt ook in dat we de opwarming van de aarde en klimaatverandering tegengaan. Onze verspillende manier van leven heeft een grote uitwerking op het milieu. Is het wel eerlijk dat minder dan een kwart van de wereldbevolking 80% van de hulpbronnen verbruikt? Solidariteit verplicht ons te zorgen voor een betere wereldwijde verdeling van de rijkdommen van de aarde. Per slot van rekening heeft God die geschonken aan de hele mensheid.
Doemdenkers zeggen dat we op zoek moeten naar een andere planeet als we willen dat de mensheid overleeft. Hoezo ‘wegwerpcultuur’! Het zou beter zijn om in te zien hoezeer God altijd maar weer verlangt dat we een andere weg inslaan (Luc 15,20) en Hem om hulp vragen, terwijl we er alles aan doen om goed voor de aarde te zorgen.
What does the seventh commandment require?
The seventh commandment requires respect for the goods of others through the practice of justice and charity, temperance and solidarity. In particular it requires respect for promises made and contracts agreed to, reparation for injustice committed and restitution of stolen goods, and respect for the integrity of creation by the prudent and moderate use of the mineral, vegetable, and animal resources of the universe with special attention to those species which are in danger of extinction [CCCC 506].
How should we treat the environment?
We fulfil God’s commission with regard to creation when we care for the earth, with its biological laws, its variety of species, its natural beauty, and its dwindling resources, as a living space and preserve it, so that future generations also can live well on earth [Youcat 436].
